In the late 1980s, Minneapolis created the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) to address urban and neighborhood decline. Between 1990 and 2005, NRP committed $280 million to neighborhood organizations across the city to help them make their communities better places to live, work and play. NRP was a major contributor to making Minneapolis' neighborhood organization network one of the best in the nation.
The innovative approach of NRP, empowering residents to identify projects within their communities and providing them with resources to implement change, won national and international awards. Accolades included an award from the United Nations, the application for which cited an extremely successful program of the SSCO's.
In 2009, with the expiration of state legislation that created funding for NRP, the City of Minneapolis created the Neighborhood & Community Engagement Commission to continue NRP initiatives.
